I'm thinking about doing my paper on the Great Garbage Patch in the Pacific Ocean. In relating this topic to the class, I will look at the role global consumerism has in contributing to the pollution. In addition, I would like to learn about and discuss how the U.S. disposes of garbage-especially plastics. Below are links relating to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch- what it is, the potential impact it may have on the ocean and food chain, and how it can be mitigated. Any feedback is much appreciated. Thanks.

I'm researching the trend of tiny dogs and the ridiculous amount of money spent on them considering the fact that they are not really healthy pups and a lot of them die very young. More specifically, I will be researching the online sales of "toy" designer pups. I found a million dollar pup online which literally costs a million bucks and it even has a note saying be aware of all the publicity you'll receive if you buy this dog.Basically, it all leads up to having the tiniest, cutest pup, and exposing them to the whole world, just like celebrities. Here are a couple of links that sell them:

I'm thinking about writing about the advertising industry's use of sex in advertising and how they objectify women in these ads. From this, I will cover why advertisers use sex to sell products and how it works. Also, I will talk about how they objectify women in these ads and the repercussions this has on women. I used the library website for the most part, so here are several books I plan to check out from the library.

This is an article entitled “Intelligent Manipulation-Edward Bernays”. It includes information on some of the advertising or “public relation” campaigns by Edward Bernays. These examples perfectly exemplify the new strategy of Edward Bernays; he appealed to peoples emotions and psychology rather than reason to make them want to buy these products. The changes he made to ivory soap campaigns, and Betty Crocker, for example, were very small but changed the emotional appeal of the product greatly.

This page includes a documentary by Adam Curtis titled “The Century of the Self”. It documents the birth of “public relations” as a means of mass control of the population.

I am considering doing my research paper on the growing widespread desire to be tan and how the tanning industry capitalizes on this-often by not telling the truth. I would like to find out the real facts about indoor tanning, because so much information that is out there is misleading.
This article describes a possible bill to be passed that would place restrictions on tanning salons, including being unable to say that tanning is good for you.

I found the Cushman article extremely interesting and would like to write about how identities are formed. The topic already sounds broad, so I will need to make it narrower.
This article is from JSTOR, entitled "Identity Construction: New Issues, New Directions". It discusses the way in which interpersonal relationships and interactions mold an individual's sense of self.

Both of these URLs contain articles looking at the relationship of pharmaceutical companies and physicians particularly discussing the practice of pharmaceutical companies giving gifts. I plan on writing about this practice and discussing the consequences of it and whether there should be a policy to change this.

I’m thinking of writing my paper on the construction of beauty through advertisement. I want to explore what advertisers look for in order to consider someone as beautiful. Additionally, I also want to research the objectification of women in advertisements as well. This topic may be a little broad, and maybe I will have to narrow it a bit. Moreover, I would also like to research the extremes some women are willing to go to to be beautiful, like cosmetic surgery, dieting, etc.
Here is an article dealing with the construction of beauty and in magazine advertisements

I'm considering doing my paper on the psychological factors behind why people form new identities / behave differently on the internet because of the consumerist society they live in. For ex., because you can't see what someone owns when talking online, they feel freer to express themselves. I'd also like to maybe compare America's internet culture with Japan's internet culture if the topic needs to be narrower.
This article discusses how Japanese feel they are only able to truly express their opinions on the internet because doing it in real life leaves them open to criticism.

I am trying to make the topic sex change. Wanna talk about basically what makes people have this idea and how it change those trans-gender people's life. The reason for this will be the problems surround him/her, he was a girl but turns out a guy... After sex change, how the family, work place and friends react.
The basic definition about sex change

Below is the a site that will give a support for those trans-gender people

This first link shows the history of Vaginoplasty, which is the male-to-female sexual reassignment surgery. Despite the fact that the site focuses solely on MTF Transsexuals, I think I can use its overall arching themes of consumption and gender identity to apply to FTM individuals as well. Towards the end of the aritcle, it explains the costs of the surgery and how it is difficult for some to have the surgery because it is so expensive. WARNING: This site does contain graphic images!

I'm writing about contraceptives and comparing the ways they are advertised. Are there differences in the way male condoms are advertised verses female contraceptives. Are the adverisements aimed at education or consumption? How has this changed over time? I argue that there is a difference in the ways that contraception is advertised towards men and women. As well as responsibility being placed on the woman to obtain contraception. I am also looking at the idea that access to contraception is more beneficial for the economy.
