One of the scenes that I considered most important was the scene in which Trueman talks to Cristof (“Crist” kind of looks like Christ). The reason for this is because this is the brink between what truth is and what “looking at the world through rose-colored lenses” is. Everyone hopes for a perfect life; they hope to be wealthy, healthy, and live a long strong life. However, they don’t realize how important the truth is to our lives. The truth is what makes us learn, it’s what makes us love, hate, and grow. It is essential to life because it keeps us entertained and wanting more. If we lived in an artificial world, where everything was perfect (such as Sea Haven) we would eventually get bored and seek out for adventure. Truth is what drives us, just as it drove Trueman. Even though he lived in a perfect world, he found it boring and wanted an adventure. The truth is our wild, without it we cannot live fully. Just as animals go crazy in a cage, we would go crazy in a fake world. Trueman went crazy, and when he finally found out that he was going to escape, he knew that his life had just begun. The truth is harsh, I agree; it can be full of hate, regret, disappointment, sadness, etc. Nevertheless, how would we learn to love without hate? Be happy without sadness? Be proud without disappointment? It’s our instinct to follow the truth, because the truth is the known to the unknown. And the road to the unknown is an adventure.
the scene that stood out the most in the Truman Show for me was towards the end when Truman was escaping Sea Haven through the ocean but he crashed into the bubble that surrounded the city. This scene intrigued me because it showed that a person must never stop trying to break away from anything deviating happiness in their lives. For example, Truman faced and conquered his biggest fear of crossing the ocean. After all he had been through by trying to break away from his reality show he still needed one extra step. It goes to show that life in general requires more than just attempting to break free, but to consistently break free and acknowledge your attempt. Shortly after he crashes into the bubble he is confronted by his "father/creator/nurturer" Cristof. Cristof tries to manipulate Truman and emotionally attach him to Sea Haven, but Truman's persistence and dedication to break free proved the deciding factor in actually taking that last step to better and start a new life. One in which he himself was the actor/narrator/ and director, not someone else telling him how to live his life.
I think a very important scene was when Cristof was willing to let Truman die in front of a live audience. All that mattered was that there were viewers watching and that he was making money out of it. In my mind I was able to compare Cristof and his decisions with those of advertisers today. Marketers do not care if they have to step over other people or whether what they are doing is the morally right thing to do. What really matters is that they are making money. In order to do so they are doing everything to control every aspect of our lives. In their marketing techniques they tell us what is right and what is wrong and expect us to believe everything that they say. They go as far as to tell us how to behave and what is expected of us being a certain gender. Like advertisements, Cristof targeted Truman since he was a baby. Cristof never gave up and created out of Truman the perfect consumer, well until he figured out what was going on. While Truman grew up he was simply told how things should go and was never really given a chance to go against it. His whole life was based around advertisements and for almost thirty years he had never gone far in questioning them. It got to the point where not only his friends and surroundings where living advertisements but he became one too. The clothes he wore, the brands he ate, and all the products he used where part of an advertisement. This goes back to when we were discussing that people in the real world are part of an advertisement by simply wearing or using certain brands. Just like Cristof saw Truman as his money baby so do advertisers see us as consumers. Emotionally however, we are simply nobodies.
I chose a scene towards the end of the movie when the news commentator has a brief interview with Cristof right after the episode where Truman comes close to discovering the real nature of the world in which he lives in. I found a few of Cristof’s quotes in the interview to be interesting. When the commentator questions Cristof as to “why Truman has never come close to discovering the world in which he lives in until now,” he answers, “We accept the reality of the world in which we are presented.” I sat at my desk trying to dissect and analyze this quote in regards to the show and in relation to my own life. It appears as though Truman lived his whole life unquestionable about the world around him because it was perfect. The world in which he lived in seemed too perfect to be true. It’s unfortunate that most people have come to the realization that something too good to be true has to be make-believe. It is just a bit unusual that Truman had been blinded by this notion his whole life and still managed to solve his quest to the truth about the reality of his life. Cristof also states “the place we live in is the sick place.” I feel as though over the years, I have accepted that this world can be a sick place, yet, I do not have the power to relinquish the sins that make up our world. Truman lived his unrealistic world until he realized he was unhappy and decided to not only change the person he was, but to seek the change in the environment around him. Whether I am happy or not, I have accepted my life and the world around me. I know I cannot do anything about the drugs, violence, corruption and everything else that poisons our world; therefore, if I seek change, I believe it first takes place within me.
In life, we have the options of wanting to pursue the truth or live in the bliss we know as ignorance. For Truman, he did not have a choice. All throughout his life he has had other people make his important decisions and as a result, he has never had a life of his own. Manipulating his feelings with artificial relationships is what kept him chained to the life he was living. For example, the scene I chose was part 6 which included Truman’s best friend reassuring him that no one is “in” on the paranoia that Truman is imagining. To have your best friend tell you that they would risk their life for you is enough to keep having faith in whatever they say. Also, the director saw that Truman was being serious about escaping, so he brought back Truman’s father to reassure Truman that there was hope in the life that he was living. What is so different about our life? Do we not live in a world where we learn to live by social norms and are manipulated to follow laws whether they are governmental or religious? Doesn’t advertisement lay out the limits on what we can or cannot be, should or shouldn’t be in life? What this scene has brought to my attention is that we all do not live our lives independent from each other, we are part of society; whether we like it or not. We’re always going to be partly influenced by an external force. The important issue to remember is to have a balance in life; it’s fine to live in a fantasy world just as long as it gives you the motivation to strive in the “real world.”
The scene I chose to write on takes place right after Truman’s freak out. In this scene, Meryl, Truman’s wife, is giving a sales pitch about the hot cocoa at one of the most inopportune times. Truman then starts to turn on her as another freak out begins. I chose this scene because I feel it solidifies that his wife is doing nothing but her job as an actress. When things are getting tough for Truman emotionally a wife who was supposed to truly love their spouse would comfort them both physically and emotionally, using whatever it took, to calm their nerves. In this instance, Meryl seems to try and keep herself sane by reinforcing her professional role through her cocoa advertisement instead of dealing with the emotional chaos. To me this also says a lot about how we act with issues in our lives as well. When opportunities arise to step up and help someone else, our selfish motives make sure nothing negative happens to us instead of performing a selfless act. Even if it only gives us a minimal consequence to relieve someone’s problems at hand, more than not, our nature leads us to avoid this confrontation. The bible is right when it says, “The more you give, the more you shall receive.” If you never put your neck out for someone, no one will do the same for you; unless you get lucky. Thus, if we continue living as selfish individuals, we’re all fucked.
This quotation from "The Meaning of the Truman Show" online would seem to fit with Monica's media/consumerism interpretation of the movie:
Thus does the movie offer us a metaphor for our own situation. The fake landscape Truman lives in is our own media landscape in which news, politics, advertising and public affairs are increasingly made up of theatrical illusions. Like our media landscape, it is convincing in its realism, with lifelike simulations and story lines, from the high-tech facsimile of a sun that benevolently beams down on Truman to the mock sincerity of the actor he mistakenly believes is his best friend. It is also rewarding and masquerades as something benevolent. And it is seamless -- there are almost no flaws that give away the illusion -- at least until things start to go wrong.
“We accept the reality of the world in which we are presented.” Daniela quotes this; and I think that what Cristo offers as an explanation for Truman's behavior is true. We simply accept "as reality itself" the world in which we live. Why for example I have asked myself should classes be an hour or an hour and fifty minutes long. Who decided. Is there any relation between learning and the length of a class. No we accept it because it is the reality with which we have been presented. There are no options.
Here's a quotation from Escaping into Reality:
The irony is Truman could leave Seahaven, at will, anytime. But Truman is imprisoned within a thick, shell of conviction, beliefs that seem perfectly justified but happen to be utterly false. He believes that his life is normal and that he should be satisfied with his personal relationships even though they're not very fulfilling. (rd 73)
"The Truman Show: How's It Going to End?" offers a slightly different interpretation of the film. It has some overlap with the idea of searching for the truth, but it looks at this issue more from the perspective of Truman's inward psychology. The author's argue that during the first part of the film Truman is himself a fake. He has developed a false self to protect himself against the dangers of his world (such as seeing his father die). Because he is false they argue he is inauthentic...would you agree.
Here is the paragraph they write to back up their claim:
Part of the pain of the early scenes in the flim lies in this sense of his inauthenticity; his over-friendly smile, exaggerated politeness, forced jokes. Much of his language is cliche-ridden and repetitive. 'The whole kit and caboodle' as he says to the newsagent, or "Good-afternoon, good evening, and good night, or "Right together, wrong together."
(so this is odd to think about about Truman, the only "real" person in the film, himself plays a role or uses his false social self to cover his "real self" (which seems to me very childlike and possibly obsessed).
I like Brandon's selection of a scene...there's a heck of a lot going on in it--where Truman has his fight with Meryl in the kitchen. Truman is having a nervous breakdown. Meryl says he needs help. Then all of a sudden she offers him cocoa...Brandon writes, "In this instance, Meryl seems to try and keep herself sane by reinforcing her professional role through her cocoa advertisement instead of dealing with the emotional chaos." This is a good observation! Rather than direct her attention to Truman's pain, she acts professionally in her role as a professional actress to stabilize the scene and herself in it.
But as Isabel writes in her entry: What is so different about our life? Or how are our lives different from Truman. Too sadly, but is true, even "real" wives and "real" husbands and "real" parents will fall back on their roles, rather than respond humanly. How many times every day does a real wife or husband or parent, rather than respond to the pain in front of them, say, here have a cookie! Or in Truman's case...a cup of hot chocolate will make you feel better.
I think that the scene that stood out to me the most is the very first scene of the movie. Truman starts by talking to himself in the bathroom creating an imaginary scene when looking into the mirror. I think that this is something that we all do at times. We want to escape the life that we are used to living everyday so we create one. More importantly we create that world when no one is looking at us. I feel that this is important because even if Truman is being recorded the whole time, it is the part of the movie in which his charter comes out as real. I say this because even though he does not know he is being recorded he still has to act a certain way around people.
What this helped me understand from the movie is that no one is in full control of the surroundings of their life, therefore neither are they in full control of their life. This means that we don't really know what we think we know because what we know is what others let us know. That we live in an illusion that only exists in opened doors because behind closed doors no one is watching so we no longer have to act a certain way.
So even when we think we have control of our everyday life we do not. Instead, we must be conscious and act based upon what is presented to us by society and it's "norms".That is why perfection is only but an illusion that people try to create.
It is unfortunate to think that there are some things that are too good to be real but this is exactly what we see in the Truman show. Waking up every morning to the greeting of the neighbor across the street with the white picket fence may be just another way of making good days almost seem real.
The scene I chose was the last scene where Truman is in the ocean trying to escape the fake world he lives in. Cristof. His “creator”, tries to keep him from entering the real world using all odds against him. Truman was restricted from knowing the truth. This scene caught my attention because we were able to see the way in which the “creator” manipulated him into believing this fake world was best for him, even if it was a world full of lies. This part of the movie represents a point in our lives where we have to choose between what is important and what is not. Through manipulations many of us tend to make choices not necessarily fit for us. People try to take charge of our lives and it is completely up to us to put a stop to it.
Scene: Truman reaches the wall of the dome and is about to step outside of the door when the creator of the show speaks to him.
The creator of the Truman show speaks to Truman as a voice from the clouds and he tells Truman that his life has been carefully constructed by him in order to keep him safe and happy. One can not help but notice the parallels between the director as the creator of the show and the God as the Supreme Being and Creator of all life. The director was playing God with Truman's life and the lives of all the people involved on the show, but why does this man get to hold such power over so many people's lives? It is almost creepy the way the director talks to Truman, he has been there his whole life his entire life looking over him and even though Truman's life is a set up there is almost a love that the director feels for Truman that relates him to a loving god. But then it brings me back to my thoughts of people, human beings playing God. Our need for control drives us to treat human lives as toys or a malleable object ot be used at our discretion and pleasure. This becomes a moral argument, is this correct? Is knowledge and pleasure so important that we must degrade human lives in our pursuit of it? The Truman Show was exactly that, a pursuit of pleasure at the expense of one mans life.
A scene that particularly stood out to me was the scene in which the "scripting" of the Truman Show is introduced when Truman is talking to his friend on the bridge. Then right after, Truman's father appears from the distant fog. Truman proceeds to walk to his father, and embraces him in a hug and tears. Cristof zooms in on Truman's crying face, and ques the music to be louder and more intense. The whole nation who is watching is just enchanted by the loving scene, and they are all "happy" for Truman. This scene stood out to me because, in my opinion, it is just sick. These people watched as Truman's dad was stripped away from him as a child, and then they rejoice when he "magically" appears back in his life again. its like a joke to them. The only real concern to Cristof is that the public is entertained, whether it be by killing Truman's loved ones or creating a movie-like scene full of superficial emotion. One thing i want to note about this scene is the lack of empathy from the viewing public. Both in real life and in the movie, I can infer that people crave to see such intense emotion, loss, despair and happiness in things like television and movies because they themselves lack these intense situations in their lives. Life these days has become far too easy, and I think people substitute things they see on tv and in movies for real human emotion that they wish they could have the opportunity to experience. The fact that the people were so into seeing Truman so happy to be reconnected with his father, without questioning the reality of the situation, just goes to show how desperate people are to feel "real" every now and then.
The scene I’m talking about is pretty much the end of the film: the scene occurs in almost complete silence. We see Truman’s boat slide into view. We can see it about to rip through the “sky,” which is actually just blue patches and white clouds painted onto canvas. Then the boat tears a hole in to the world. Essentially, it’s the moment Truman pushes through the false barriers that have limited his life. Before he continues, he even has a chat with Kristof, who speaks to him over a massive loudspeaker. In a sense, Truman talks to his god–the creator of his limited reality–then chooses to leave the “reality” which his god has created for him. He walks up a flight of cloud stairs and steps into a completely black doorway. He leaves in to the darkness, we aren’t sure where he is headed to and neither is he but we are sure he’s gone. This scene reminds me of the book The Giver when the Jonas is leaving his false reality with the newborn, it seems as though everyone struggles with their own false world.
In our own lives, when we stop believing a powerful lie, we throw ourselves into a void. We see that the world we’ve been living in quite as big as we’d been led to believe, we are then filled by uncertainty as to what new world will replace our old one. Still, we step into the unknown/uncertainty of new options, and if we’re lucky, we feel liberated and if unlucky we are forced in to an endless search for the “truth.”
The scene that made the most impression on me was the scene where Truman and Sylvia find each other in the library and end up running off together to the beach. Soon after, Sylvia and Truman are found by another actor who drags Sylvia away claiming that he is her "dad."
The importance of this scene is that this is the last scene where we get to see Sylvia and Truman together before they are separated. This is also a vital scene because this is where I began to see a change in the life of Truman. Everything in that world began to seem more and more fabricated. Also, this scene is where we begin to gain more information on what Truman's life really is, only a reality show that is scripted.
The scene that stood out the most to me was when Truman began to realize that something wasn't right and his wife says, "I can't work under these unprofessional conditions." This is the scene where Truman realized that everything going on in his life was fake. He had finally come to the realization that his entire world was make believe and that no one he trusted was really worth trusting. This scene was important to the movie as a whole because it showed how we as people can live in a world as actors portraying someone/something that we are not. In trying to connect this to the consumer society I was surprised at how much the imaginary world in which Truman lived in, can be compared to the impact the consumer society has on our psyche. The retailers of products being advertised in todays society play the role of all of the people in Truman's life whom he trusted but had no genuine concern for his well being. We live in a consumer society filled with Meryl and Christof personas waiting for the opportunity to radically transform our lives at the drop of a hat without our permission. When we purchase things that we dont really need we have a false assumption that these things will enhance our lives but in reality they just add to the amount of frivolous items we own.
The following dialogue between the network executive and Christof is what caught my attention:
Network Executive: For God's sake, Chris! The whole world is watching. We can't let him die in front of a live audience!
Christof: He was born in front of a live audience.
I find this relevant to the topics we have discussed in class. I think this relates to what advertisers and big corporations do in order to attract consumers (general public). They go to any length in order to make profit or meet rating requirements in the case of television shows. This dialogue shows us that Christof, the creator of the Truman show, does not care what happens to the star of the show. His best interest is that of the show. He argues that if we were able to put his whole life on television, why not his death as well? To Christof, Truman is just his marketing tool, his way of making money. Through this show he gets to advertise or simply just publicize certain things, ideas, values, etc.
-The scene where Truman does everything in his power to escape, but everything was never enough.
I think it just goes to show that no matter how hard we try we will never be able to break free from the control that media has over society and that society has over each individual.
-All the scenes where the actors on the show advertise different products (beer, lawn mower, etc.).
The viewers of the show are us. Us, who day to day are being advertised to, cleverly, so many times it is unrecognizable.
-The scenes where they keep Truman from all the people who are trying to warn him about the lie he is living.
The media is always trying to keep us from learning the truth and when ever a truth is revealed they find ways to cover it up with yet another lie. Like when Truman sees his father on a street who was suppose to be dead, they produce a lie to cover up the first lie. We are all just living a big fat lie!
I believe that one of the most integral scenes in The Truman Show that lends to the significance of the film is a scene towards the middle of the movie. The scene is where Truman asks his wife to sit in the car with him and explains to her that the three actors who pass behind the car are on a loop and continue to circle the block throughout the day. It seems to me as though this is the point in Truman’s discovery when he makes the conscious decision to LIVE. He drives off, he takes a risk, he acknowledges and internalizes what he’s discovered and allows him self to deviate from that which he has been programmed to do since day one. It’s difficult to imagine the gravity of a realization of this magnitude. Think to yourself, how would you react if you realized that your life was staged? Truman, I believe, reacted the way a real human would. After all, what makes someone human is their ability to feel, their life experiences, and the way they react to them; but above all else, it’s the desire to feel. Truman knows that what he’s “felt” thus far is not a manifestation of life because life is spontaneous, and while his life seemed spontaneous to him, to those around him (all actors) it was planned. Thus, the natural role of those around us in making our lives unique and genuine is lost in Truman’s world.
The entire film was just amazing. The part which stood out the most was ht very last scene of the film. Truman feels like he has overcome all obstacles that are not allowing him to live a normal life. He sits in the boat calm because he has now succeeded and is free to go wherever he wants. He felt happy and a great accomplishment. To his surprise, he comes across a wall. It is a wall that separates him from the real world. I personally think that when he came across this wall, his hope faded away. Truman must have felt disillusioned. He probably thought that he was not going to be able to escape from that cave where he had lived trapped and controlled. He desperately hits the wall although he might have been aware that the wall was too strong for him. Still, he attempted to bring it down. The wall was preventing Truman to escape.
This scene can be tied to the way advertisements manipulate consumers into being life time consumers. For instance, I know of people (friends) that love to buy over priced brand clothing. They are aware that it is a waist of their money and that they can get a better deal somewhere else. Still, they are unable to let go of the habit of buying expensive clothes. One of my friends once told me that she has tried multiple times to let go of that habit but inevitably fail. The reason, I think, is because the brand line continues to update the style of their clothes. They know that customers continually seek new styles. This is strategy that they use to prevent their faithful consumers from running away. Fortunately, Truman was able to run away and overcome what was stopping him. Unfortunately, nowadays, consumers are not strong enough to let go of unnecessary products which they have been sucked into. Why? It is simply because manufacturers are becoming our “Cristof.” They are in a way controlling what we see and how often we see it.
This imbecile 'Merkin who burned the Holy Koran at the World trade center is such a scumbag. I pray that Muslims understand that he doesn't symbolize Americans, but I recognize that their feelings will be extremely hurt by his insult.
I'm a newspaper reporter, and am marveled at the way this was written!
Hey, maybe this is a bit offf topic but in any case, I have been surfing about your blog and it looks really neat. impassioned about your writing. I am creating a new blog and hard-pressed to make it appear great, and supply excellent articles. I have discovered a lot on your site and I look forward to additional updates and will be back.
Sorry for the huge review, but I'm really loving the new Zune, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it's the right choice for you.
There'll perpetually be a person doing anything precisely for the great shock worth of it. Lady Gaga proclaimed she didn’t desire to offend vegetarians and that also she is not a joint of chicken.....really what was her implication?....what will we now have been taught within the declaration the woman was trying to make? I will have to state..zilch. All we will think of is the "meat" gown. Contemplate the span of time she stays up nights dreaming up stunts to keep us speaking about her.
Truly Shameful that individuals now let Extremist Foreign Political People on our soil soon after many years of hate towards our land. The US should leave the UN and show each one of these extremists our opinion of there stupid ideological background. Qaddafi, Ahmadinejad, Chavez, and more have far to long been welcomed to the Sacred and Beautiful land. I say Enough will do, Close our doors to Hateful Bastards and Say Never again to the U.N. Leave, your NOT nor have never been made welcome.
I am aware. It can be genuinely hard to differentiate between the pair of them. Both being America haters, hell bent on its wrecking. Often criticize The usa and People in america ceaselessly. Here is a hint, Barack obama stands out as the one these days succeeding in ruining Our great country.
I do think The president is likely wasting his time refuting Ahmadinejad considering the fact that a large amount of American’s happened to be lumping Ahmadinejad along side each other in the same grouping with Obama—however , if Obama is to be accepted, and who knows in this case, Perhaps this is the one instance where President obama wouldn't fault Bush.
Truly Shameful we now let Extremist Foreign Political Characters on our soil soon after numerous years of hate towards our land. United states should get free from the UN and show all of them extremists our thoughts of there stupid ideology. Qaddafi, Ahmadinejad, Chavez, and many more have far to long been made welcome to our Sacred and Superb land. I only say Enough will do, Shut our doors to Hateful Bastards and Say No to the U.N. Leave, your NOT nor have never been welcomed.
Colton Tooley, 19, is the shooter involved in the incident on the University or college of Texas today, what is actually happening to The country?

Lohan Goes to Rehabilitation Today,. this is only a ploy to decrease the jail time so as the judge will likely to be easygoing with her. Cushy rehab is sooo superior to prison, probably the judge won't give her any jail time since he'll almost certainly be so impressed!
Today, Rush played shows of Obama and Hillary Clinton along with Dems soon after played segments from Ahmadinejad’s special message and pointed out that they together repeat the same things when discussing America and capitalism.
I am certain. It is actually genuinely difficult to know the difference between the pair of these. They are both America haters, hell bent on it's devastation. The two criticize The us . and People in the usa continuously. Here is a hint, Barak might be the one at this moment doing well in obliterating Our great country.

Lindsay Lohan Moves to Treatment Today. Advisable choice in any case being in rehabilitate will mean she won't infringe her bail conditions and be thrown in jail before the hearing. If at the hearing her single violation had been determined for being the one bad junk test then the sentence should be one month in jail and that's it.
Viewing sibling spouses...these types of bitches are crazy. I could in reveal my hubby!
So why in the hell do we let the UN to stay in UN and support it? Kick it out! And, the applause of this fanatic should make it More critical that there be no mosque at Ground Zero.
Lohan Moves to Treatment Today,. this is just a ploy to minimize the incarceration hence the judge will undoubtedly be easygoing with her. Cushy rehabilitation is sooo much better than prison, its possible the judge would not give her any incarceration due to he will probably be so pleased!

Sen. Graham refers to Glen Beck a "positive force". Is that a little bit like naming Rick Sanchez for being an expert on Judaism?
And today there is a terror warning for People in the usa traveling in The european union. Nonetheless the joke’s on you, terrorists – we simply cannot afford to go to European union!
Lohan Should go to Rehabilitate Today, four weeks later she is going to be back at it. Shame about the "star struck" legal courts for permitting this young woman to destroy her life. Right now she deserves discipline not rehab.
Lindsay Lohan Is going to Treatment Today, Your girl will be out by Friday. What is needed is a couple of days of feeling "good", and she'll guess she can do it now by herself. Had the experience... done that! (Do i get her physician's number? I've got ADD).
This indicates you only get terminated should you say hateful things relating to Jews (Helen Thomas now Sanchez).
Lindsay Lohan isn't going to be going any place which will keep her from filming, so once more, I call Bull crap on that serious intense inpatient treatment tripe. There isn't any way the girl or her mom will miss out on this chance to make bucks. And without doubt she does not dislike that scram bracelet good enough to stop the jack and coke and stop stuffing sh*t up her ugly nose.
Rahm Emanuel disqualifed from running for Mayor of Chicago? He may not permit some thing which includes law get in his way.
Exceptional! Ahmadinejad did us a favor! While we frantically delude our self into considering this guy (and others who applaud him) are fit to get treated as reasonable human beings, he spits in our face to point out to us that many of us are (yet again) fooling ourself.
